Screen time
Minimalist home screen on Android: fewer icons, less scrolling
A visible icon is an invitation. Decluttering your home screen is one of the simplest ways to pick up your phone less often. Here's how to do it on Android, and why an empty screen isn't always enough.

Why the home screen matters so much
It's the screen you see most: every time you unlock, it's there. If it's full of colorful icons and red badges, every unlock becomes a temptation. Emptying it removes the temptation at the source.
Declutter your Android home screen, step by step
- Keep only the useful apps on the main screen: phone, messages, camera, maps.
- Put everything else in the app drawer, and take social media apps off the screen.
- Turn off notification badges in the settings.
- Choose a plain wallpaper, or a photo that makes you want to look up.
- To go further, switch the screen to grayscale: about 39 minutes less a day in one study (Holte and Ferraro, 2020). The guide: turn your phone black and white.
Ready-made minimalist home screens
Apps like Olauncher or Niagara, known as "launchers", replace the home screen with a simple list of names. Fewer temptations, it's true. But once the app is open, nothing stops you, and Reels or Shorts are still there.
A minimalist screen that goes all the way
Livetime starts from the same idea, a home screen without icons where you open apps by typing their name, and adds what's missing to make it last:
- a wait before the apps you open on reflex;
- a time decided before going into addictive apps;
- Instagram without Reels, YouTube without Shorts;
- modes that keep only the apps for the moment on screen;
- useful widgets: clock, weather, tasks and habits.
The home screen, rethought. Livetime replaces your Android's to help you scroll less and live more. See all the features.
Frequently asked questions
Does a minimalist home screen really cut screen time?
It cuts reflex openings. To reduce the time spent once an app is open, you also need a limit, or to remove endless feeds.
Can I have a minimalist home screen on iPhone?
You can declutter your pages and use the App Library, but the iPhone doesn't let you replace the home screen with another app.
Will I lose my apps?
No: with Livetime, as with a decluttered screen, all your apps stay installed and available.
